REX Theater offering coffee’s “greatest hits”

While taking a walk down North Palafox Street, it’s hard to miss the Art Deco red and yellow hues of the iconic REX Theater marquee. Hidden inside the historic building — home to Generation Church — is Pensacola’s newest coffee shop.

In the wake of its soft opening last month, The Rex Café is striving to show its customers that a simple, but authentic, cup of coffee provides greater quality than the frills of the ever-changing coffee scene.

The inside of the café is timeless with a single coffee counter accompanied by a brass roaster, the original brick walls of the establishment, and, most importantly, a short and quaint menu.

At The Rex Café, Assistant Manager Annie Gray and Store Manager/Associate Pastor Lois Renaud — or as the locals call him, “The Coffee Pastor” — blend their differing backgrounds to produce a robust espresso beverage you can “feel and taste.”

Menu starring the classics

Annie Gray pulls a cold brew coffee drink at Pensacola's newest coffee hotspot, The Rex Cafe, on Thursday, May 12, 2022. Located in the old Rex Theater, The cafe serves various hot and cold coffee drinks and select teas.

Similar to how the REX Theater screened the classics, The Rex Cafe’s menu offers the “greatest hits” of coffee. Offered in small, medium and large sizes, the menu lists 11 items to choose from, such as lattes starting at $4 or macchiatos starting at $3.50.

The cafe’s sole signature drink, the popcorn latte, produces a buttery, salty flavor that doesn’t overpower the star of the show: the espresso shot.
